The medical student education program at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry (SMD) earned full accreditation for the next 8 years from the Liaison Committee on Medical Education ().

Sponsored by the Association of American Medical Colleges () and the American Medical Association (), the LCME determines whether medical education programs meet established quality standards and continually strive to improve in areas such as educational resources and infrastructure, curriculum management, evaluation and enhancement, and student support. Accreditation qualifies an institution for relevant federal grants and programs and ensures graduates are eligible for licensing exams required to practice medicine in the U.S.

“In order to receive full accreditation a program has to demonstrate that they’re providing a solid foundation that prepares graduates not only for the next stage of their training, but for lifelong careers in medicine,” said David C. Linehan, MD, CEO of the 麻豆视频 (URMC) and dean of SMD. “I’m extremely proud of the wonderful work of program leaders, faculty, staff and students under the leadership of former Dean Mark B. Taubman, MD, whose collective commitment led to this success. I’m excited to join them in continuing our tradition of excellence in training the next generation of physicians.”

In the fall of 2023, a LCME survey team visited SMD to review the school’s performance in the elements related to each accreditation standard. In the two years leading up to the visit, the MD program went through a rigorous process of data collection and analysis (dubbed “the self-study”) to showcase the progress made in each of the 12 standards and corresponding 93 elements. The school was “compliant” (the highest rating possible) in all 12 standards. The LCME requested follow up data on four elements to ensure the school sustains is performance.

“When the survey team visited Rochester, they were impressed with our curriculum review processes and the collegial and supportive atmosphere that they saw across the school, both in meetings and in walking and talking with people in  the hallways,” said David R. Lambert, MD, senior associate dean for Medical School Education. “Everyone at the school helped us achieve this result, which is a testament to the quality and strength of our program and the collaborative spirit that distinguishes SMD from other institutions.”

Established programs typically undergo the self-study process and a full survey visit every 8 years. SMD was previously accredited in 2016 and its accreditation status will be reviewed again in 2032. The MD program team will continue to monitor its performance in the elements for accreditation on an on-going basis.
