New Decision-Making Resource Aims To Help Community Get Care Now

Nov. 11, 2022

UR Medicine has launched Get Care Now, an online resource to help our community make informed choices to get the right care in the right setting within the UR Medicine health system.

The Get Care Now decision-making tool spells out the levels of care available – primary care, including telemedicine services, urgent care, and emergency care – and provides up-to-the-minute at our 13 urgent care locations in Monroe County and the Finger Lakes region.

There is also an extensive symptom guide featuring a grid outlining illnesses and injuries, and where to get care. It demonstrates that the emergency department should only be used for life- or limb-threatening care.

Health leaders are concerned about the “tripledemic” – the confluence of influenza and RSV, which are virulent and spreading earlier than normal, and the possibility of another COVID-19 surge – and the nursing home bed shortage, which is creating hospital overcrowding.

Monroe County and Rochester health systems and agencies, and business leaders addressed this challenge when announcing the county’s Keep Your Holidays Healthy last week.

“We urge everyone to get their flu shot, and the COVID booster if they are eligible. Our hospitals have extremely limited capacity to care for a surge in flu or COVID patients that could be avoided if the community is willing to be vaccinated,” said Michael Apostolakos, M.D., chief medical officer for UR Medicine’s Strong Memorial and Highland hospitals.

If someone is sick, Get Care Now provides a full view of the resources available at each setting so patients can choose what is appropriate for them.

“When people are sick or injured, they want care quickly. We need our community to know and use all of the options available to them so they can connect with our care teams where and when they need them,” Apostolakos said. “Most importantly, we need people to be proactive and stay healthy.”

Here are four ways to avoid illness:

  • Get the and COVID booster if you’re eligible;
  • Avoid people who are sick;
  • Practice good hygiene to reduce the spread of germs; and,
  • If you are sick, seek care early to prevent serious illness.
