Jill Halterman, MD, MPH, Dr. Elizabeth R. McAnarney Professor in Pediatrics and executive vice-chair of the department of Pediatrics, has been named chair of the department of Pediatrics and physician-in-chief of Golisano Children’s Hospital (GCH). Halterman, who has served as interim chair since February 2023, will begin her new role on December 1, 2023, pending approval by the Office of the Provost and the University of Rochester Board of Trustees.

For the past 20 years, Halterman has supported GCH and the wider Rochester community by providing high-quality clinical care, conducting research to reduce barriers to care for children, and leading faculty and staff in Pediatrics while serving in various roles. Her in-depth knowledge of the children’s hospital and the people it serves, coupled with the professional admiration she has among colleagues at GCH, make her the ideal candidate for the position, according to Mark Taubman, MD, CEO of 麻豆视频and dean of the School of Medicine and Dentistry.

A History of Proactive Leadership

Throughout her career, Halterman has launched several successful health programs in the Monroe County region that now serve as national models for improving care. For example, she worked with a team to develop the Preventive Care Program for Children with Asthma, an initiative that partners with the Rochester City School District and School Health Program to decrease the burden of asthma and to better understand gaps in asthma health care. Over time, more than 1,500 children have received care under this program, leading to improvements in symptoms, reduced absenteeism from school, and decreased asthma attacks.

In addition to her work overseeing the asthma program, Halterman has led the division of General Pediatrics since 2015, which includes research, education, and community programs, as well as the Golisano Children’s Hospital (GCH) Pediatric Practice. , having published more than 150 peer-reviewed articles and secured more than $28 million in extramural research funding to investigate methods to improve the delivery of care for children with asthma.

A 1994 graduate of the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry, Halterman served a one-year internship at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia before returning for her residency and fellowship at URMC, where she has remained ever since. She has received multiple honors, including the Rochester Business Journal Health Care Heroes 2020 Physician Award, the 2019 Samuel Rosenthal Prize for Excellence in Academic Pediatrics, the 2019 Dr. David Satcher Community Health Improvement Award, and the 2013 Ruth A. Lawrence Academic Faculty Service Award for community-based research, mentoring, and leadership.
