Department of Medicine Announces Two New Vice-Chairs
Stephen Hammes, M.D., Ph.D. and Daniel Mulkerin, M.D. were recently appointed to new leadership roles in the Department of Medicine. Hammes has taken on the additional role of Executive Vice-Chair. The recently hired Mulkerin has joined as Vice-Chair for Regional Operations.

In his new role, Hammes will work closely with Chair Ruth O’Regan, M.D. to oversee activities across the entire department’s 14 divisions. “I am delighted with this new opportunity and truly honored that Dr. O’Regan has so much faith in me,” said Hammes. “I love our department and look forward to continuing to help grow scholarship at all levels, from training medical students and residents on up to mentoring and supporting our outstanding and dedicated faculty.”
Hammes joined 麻豆视频faculty in 2009 as the Louis S. Wolk Distinguished Professor of Medicine and is Chief of the Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Metabolism. He previously served as Vice-Chair for Academic Affairs and Research for the department, and will continue to work closely with and oversee the new Vice-Chairs that will be appointed into these positions. He is the principal investigator of the Hammes laboratory, which studies steroid signaling and steroid production, and the role these play in fertility and cancer.
Hammes earned his M.D. and Ph.D. from Duke University. He held his residency in internal medicine at the University of California, San Francisco Medical Center, followed by a fellowship in endocrinology. Before joining URMC, he was a faculty member at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center where he led the endocrinology fellowship program.
Daniel Mulkerin
Mulkerin joins the faculty from the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health where he was the medical director of the Carbone Cancer Center. He will take on multiple roles: serving as Vice-Chair for Regional Operations for the DOM, associate clinical director for regional cancer operations at the Wilmot Cancer Institute, and as interim professor of hematology/oncology.
This Vice-Chair position is a newly created role designed to expand the geographic footprint of care and services. With technological advances, many patients are being served out in the community rather than a hospital setting, and Mulkerin will build on existing relationships and forge new one throughout the Finger Lakes and Southern Tier regions. In addition to the clinical care provided at these facilities, Mulkerin will work towards advancing academic missions with them as well.
“I am excited and honored to be part of the Department of Medicine team,” said Mulkerin. “Over my career, I have practiced in both highly specialized academic settings, and more general settings in small communities. My practice experiences have given me passion for extending the expertise and academic missions of our programs to patients in their communities. My focus will be on extending the footprint of our clinical enterprise, and leveraging each service area for opportunities in education and research.”
Mulkerin earned his M.D. from Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia. He then held his residency in internal medicine at the University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics, where he spent one year as chief resident, followed by his fellowship in medical oncology.
